New iPhone Application Delivers Turn-By-Turn Navigation on iPod Touch

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

DataArt recently announced that it has finished the back-end development work on GeoLife’s Navmii personal navigation device. With the latest software enhancement, Navmii will be able to offer turn-by-turn navigation for the iPod Touch device.

According to officials with DataArt, what sets apart the personal navigation application from Navmii is that it incorporates useful features such as GPS navigation with smart routing, interactive maps and voice based directions to the iPod Touch device - features not offered by any contemporary personal navigation device.

The company said it will make the latest version of Navmii for iPhone (News - Alert) and the iPod Touch commercially available in the United States by the end of the year.

DataArt successfully combined GeoLife’s Navmii personal navigation application with PosiMotion’s G-Fi mobile network and GPS router to evolve a cutting edge application. This is currently being made available via the network of Apple (News - Alert) iTunes App Store. The latest application utilizes G-Fi’s satellite GPS to provide co-ordinates for locations in a much more accurate and dependable manner versus regular cellular or Bluetooth triangulation.

Peter Atalla, CEO of GeoLife said, “Outside of a GPS manufacturer, it’s very hard – and rare – to find the type of technical expertise in an outsourcing company that’s needed for this type of application. DataArt’s deep expertise in both navigation and LBS technologies made them a natural choice. We’ve worked with DataArt for more than two years on similar projects that required rapid delivery and have consistently been impressed with the level of innovation.”

The company also asserts that moving forward site based services will play a significant role in the mobile segment. Navmii defines a major step ahead for these capabilities and DataArt intends to extend its role as a vendor of choice for evolving mobile software solutions in its operating segment.

The Navmii is already available in the U.K. via the Apple App stores network. IPod Touch users will need to install both Navmii and the G-Fi application for a more complete navigation experience.
