Statoil Picks CapRock to Outfit New Drillship with VSAT Solutions

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

CapRock Communications, a supplier of communications solutions to inaccessible situations in the international space, reportedly announced that it signed a long term agreement with Statoil to deliver satellite communications solutions to the latter’s new drillship.
Norway-based Statoil is an international energy resource provider that has focused business channels in upstream oil and gas operations. It will use solutions delivered by CapRock to support its onboard crew while its drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico are underway.
A dependable and secure communications solution is integral to sustaining high performance levels and maintaining connectivity with onshore units in situations where the operations are conducted in the deepest of seas, several hundred miles away from the nearest land base. CapRock delivers a fully managed VSAT solution, which is equipped with network design, equipment and deployment and also supported by round the clock network monitoring and administration.
This solution will help Statoil’s onboard crew to receive the full experience of voice and data communications akin to what they would have received in a conventional office set up. The onboard crew can transmit information to onshore specialists. In addition, they can work together in a better manner and make quick decisions which are often essential to the smooth and uninterrupted flow of everyday operations.
The company has also planned to backhaul its communications traffic to some of the client’s land based sites. With this proposed backhauling, Statoil specialists will be able to better administer the offshore operations from even remote locations such as their desktops. This, in turn, will cut down dramatically the travel budgets and bring about substantial cost reductions.
“Statoil demonstrates a level of excellence in its drilling operations and we are honored to have been selected to meet that same level of excellence with our communication services,” CapRock Vice President and Managing Director for the EMEA region Eduardo Correa said. “This award is testament to CapRock’s proven track record of reliability and quality of service, and we look forward to further broadening our relationship with Statoil.”
CapRock’s clientele includes several energy, maritime, government, engineering and construction and mining industries as well as disaster recuperation service enterprises. It is reputed to provide a host of dependable managed communication services like broadband Internet, Voice over IP, secure networking and real-time video to the world's most difficult and challenging terrains.
