Harmonic to Help Korean Telecom Distribute Primary and Backup Broadcast Channels

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

Korean telecommunications company KT has announced it will be making use of Harmonic’s Ellipse 1000 contribution encoder, ProView 2900 integrated receiver/decoder and network management solution for distributing primary and backup broadcast channels over 160 cable operators nationwide.

With Harmonic’s (News - Alert) solutions, KT will also be able to offer cost-effective and secure satellite distribution with terrestrial IP backup services, and deliver additional channels.

Thanks to Harmonic’s versatile technology, KT (News - Alert) can build upon their legacy systems and create an end-to-end solution for contribution and distribution applications, allowing them to continue offering state-of-the-art services now and in the future.

The Ellipse 1000 from Harmonic, provides KT with full encryption capabilities to secure content for both distribution paths and Ellipse 1000's advanced encoding technology and bandwidth efficiency - giving KT the option to add more channels in the future.

According to Harmonic, the Ellipse 1000 contribution encoder is a high quality professional encoder ideal for fixed contribution over IP and legacy ATM/PDH/SDH networks and offers efficient bit-rate utilization for delivery of high quality video. The Ellipse 1000 simultaneously encodes video feeds as MPEG-2 SD 4:2:0/4:2:2 and MPEG-4 AVC SD 4:2:0, providing a smooth and cost-effective migration path from MPEG-2 CBR to MPEG-4 AVC CBR encoding schemes. It can be also made to process MPEG-4 AVC HD media files through a simple firmware upgrade.

Also, the company’s professional ProView 2900 IRD is a broadcast-quality decoder, decryptor and interface converter that provides MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC standard definition decoding, advanced transport stream processing, IP processing technologies and a variety of front-ends, including DVB-S2 and MPEG over IP.
