Cisco Delivers Mobility for Cruise Ship Guests

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor

A next-generation Cisco network is reportedly keeping passengers connected on a cruise ship. Travelers on Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas will get to use innovative services and amenities designed to enhance the guest experience.

Traveling on Cisco (News - Alert) powered Oasis of the Seas promises a world class communications experience for guests who can benefit from the integration of mobility and digital media technologies.

Cisco and Royal Caribbean worked closely to deliver this experience and have succeeded in networking this revolutionary cruise ship. This flexible and scalable network enables the global cruise brand to add amenities and services in the future.

Cisco’s unified wireless network provides a wide range of services for Oasis guests. Wireless point-of-sale devices lets guest purchases be processed anywhere on the ship and Cisco Unified Wireless IP Phones speed the delivery of key guest services throughout the vessel.

Guests can rent a wireless phone on the ship to chat with other guests, or simply view daily events. These devices will also act as real-time location tracking tools. This huge ship has more than 900 Cisco wireless access points and equipped with the Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance that delivers comprehensive security for the network. This ASA also provides high-performance firewalling and virtual private network connectivity.

Entertaining and informational content is delivered by digital media systems powered by the Cisco network. About 300 interactive digital signs run on the Cisco network and all rooms have Internet Protocol television that reliably delivers programming to passengers.

Insight, a Cisco Gold Certified Partner based in Tempe, Ariz., and Cygate Finland, a Cisco Gold Certified Partner in Espoo, Finland, helped in rolling out the network solution aboard Oasis.

“Oasis of the Seas delivers a level of technological innovation that is unprecedented in our industry. The Cisco solution is central to the experience and enjoyment of our guests, which is our top priority,” Bill Martin, vice president and chief information officer, Royal Caribbean Cruises, said. “Cisco has been a strategic partner throughout this engagement, not only providing the technology, but also consulting with us and ensuring the solution would be architected to deliver maximum benefit to our guests around the world.”

To find out more about Cisco, visit the company at ITEXPO East 2010. To be held Jan. 20 to 22 in Miami, ITEXPO (News - Alert) is the world’s premier IP communications event. Kittur Nagesh, Director, Service Provider Marketing – Mobility, is speaking during “Network Operators Prepare for the 200MB Lifestyle.” Don’t wait. Register now.
