Google to Test TV Search Service with Dish

According to industry sources, Google (News - Alert) Inc. is testing a new television programming search service with Dish Network Corp., The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.
The service allows users to search content from Dish, as well as other Web video sites, and runs on TV set-top boxes that include elements of Google’s Android (News - Alert) operating system, according to Trading Markets.
The WSJ also reported that viewers can search by typing on a keyboard, instead of using a remote control. In December, DISH announced that it recently passed the 14 million customer milestone.
“Surpassing 14 million subscribers is testimony to the strides we made over the past year in providing a best-in-class video experience,” said Charlie Ergen, chairman, president and CEO of DISH Network.
However, the company is currently embattled in litigation involving TiVO, as TMCnet recently reported. TiVo (News - Alert) stands to reap a windfall from a federal appeals court’s decision over patents for digital video recorders, as the court cleared the way for TiVo to collect hundreds of millions of dollars.
