By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

SkyTerra Communications (News - Alert), a provider of mobile wireless voice and data services, announced that it has rolled out a new radio software that will add data capability on company’s MSAT-G2 mobile satellite radio equipment.

According to a press release, the new data software was developed by Hughes (News - Alert) and helps in expanding the applications of MSAT-G2 mobile satellite radio equipment for government and enterprise customers. It will enable customers to send crucial data via satellite over MSAT-G2 (News - Alert) radio.

Currently, the MSAT-G2 mobile satellite radio equipment supports continent-wide group as well as private push-to-talk, push-to-track and voice communications throughout North America.

Apart from supporting two-way transfer of data, SkyTerra’s MSAT-G2 radio also features GPS capability and flexible interconnectivity to a variety of third party interfaces. In addition, the radio is provided with Land Mobile and Maritime antenna options, in order to provide advanced satellite tracking capabilities. This capability enables users to communicate regardless of their location.

The new software rolled-out for the MSAT-G2 radio equipment facilitates users of the MSAT-G2 to perform a variety of data applications, such as e-mail and text messaging, file transfer, remote monitoring, fleet dispatch as well as secure voice communications.

Bryan Hartin (News - Alert), vice president of sales, marketing and customer support for SkyTerra, said, “We’ve long been the only North American satellite provider offering push-to-talk capability. Now we’re excited to also offer our customers the ability to send crucial data via satellite over our versatile MSAT-G2 radio.”

Officials with SkyTerra said in the release that the MSAT-G2 radio equipment in the field could be upgraded with the new data software via authorized SkyTerra service providers or dealers.

Hartin added, “Later in 2010, SkyTerra plans to launch the first of two of the most powerful commercial satellites ever built. These new satellites will enable the SkyTerra network to continue to support communications in a variety of market segments including public safety, homeland security, transportation and entertainment, by providing a platform for interoperable, user-friendly and feature-rich voice and high-speed data services.”

SkyTerra Communications, Inc. owns 100 percent of SkyTerra LP. SkyTerra LP together with SkyTerra (Canada), Inc. jointly operates the MSAT satellites and telecommunications network. The company offers mobile wireless voice and data services primarily for public safety, security, fleet management and asset tracking in the United States and Canada.
