U.S. Cellular Leverages Loopt's LBS

By Mini Swamy, TMCnet Contributor

Perhaps one of the most powerful ways to personalize a mobile is add value-based services that deal with location. Succumbing to the enormous demand for LBS or Location-based services, U.S. Cellular (News - Alert), a leading nationwide mobile carrier, has decided to extend its LBS to even more of its mobile users by leveraging the Loopt (News - Alert) Location Platform.

Loopt is the leading location-based mobile social mapping company and produces a suite of mobile applications to allow users to discover the world around them with the help of location-based social apps and wireless location infrastructure.

The Loopt Location platform equips users with more frequent and accurate location updates, and by extending assisted location services to U.S. Cellular subscribers, U.S. cellular customers can now do more with their handsets, taking its functionality to a newer level.

United States operators have a rapidly growing location infrastructure partner in Loopt, which is working aggressively to expand its offerings for Brew-enabled handsets and growing smartphone user bases.

"Location services are a transformative feature for mobile devices," Sam Altman (News - Alert), co-founder and CEO of Loopt said, and added that they have been working hard to make the assisted location service and economics work effectively to benefit a larger percentage of mobile subscribers. He added that U.S. Cellular was paving the way by introducing the location-based services to its users.

Loopt is working with U.S. Cellular on various location experiences for its customers, including mapping and geo-location apps. U.S. Cellular has leveraged the Loopt Location Platform in their recent partnership with TeleNav (News - Alert) and the launch of its new navigation service "Your Navigator Deluxe."

SnapTrack, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm has licensed its Qpoint location server software to Loopt, which forms the base for Loopt's Location Platform.

In conjunction with Qualcomm's positioning technology, Loopt's hosted LBS solution is offering advanced solutions to multiple U.S. carriers.

Loopt provides a high-quality, low-cost Location Platform infrastructure for positioning capabilities on location-based apps and services. Its products use location on mobile phones, iPad and iPod touch devices to help their users find and enjoy the friends, places, and events around them.

U.S. Cellular believes that a wireless phone enhances people's lives and a wireless company should be in the business of bringing people together. U.S. Cellular has a wide range of monthly plans, including those with unlimited nationwide calling, unlimited free incoming calls and options to prepay.

In a related news release, Loopt announced the launch of its Loopt Pulse (News - Alert) App for iPad is available in the App Store. The app is a specially designed version that provides iPad users with a quick and easy way to keep up with what's happening around them by providing real-time information on tens of thousands of local events.
